I believe that the tree was “planted” by Smokey Stover and his heavy equipment (engineer corps?) in WWII. At a gathering in Kodiak, Alaska, long after he retired. He told stories of their pranks after the Japanese were defeated. He said they fond a tree in the driftwood and stuck in the ground upside down. The told the press that “there was a women behind every tree”on the island of Attu!
